LONDON — Nathan Stein hardly seemed “speechless” in the moments immediately following his first Paralympic medal, a silver in the S10 50-metre freestyle.

“I mean, holy smokes — first Paralympics, you can't ask for more than that, right.”

But the 20-year-old from Maple Ridge did seem to still be in disbelief 25 minutes later when he came out on the pool deck for the medal ceremony. He clasped his head in his hands as he took his position, then patted his heart as if to assure himself that this was, in fact, reality.

Even then, though, after the medal was put around his neck, he kept staring down at it, fingering it in his hands with a sense of wide-eyed wonder.

The big, gregarious kid, broad-shouldered and sporting a “No Surrender” tattoo over his heart, could easily pass for an Olympian until you catch a closer glimpse of his left leg.

It's been operated on a dozen times since the age of 11 when “I happened to break half my knee off” while playing soccer. He had a bone deficiency — Osteochondritis Dissecans — in the knee, a condition that had worsened over time.

“Really unfortunate, but that's the name of the game,” Stein said in matter-of-fact manner. “When you go in for that many surgeries, it doesn't really matter any more. It just seems like it's so repetitive, like you don't know what else to do.

“If [doctors] call me after we get back and say ‘Hey, we've got to clean everything up,’ I'll be like ‘sure, whatever. When do you want me.’ ”

When he hasn't been undergoing surgery or recovering from it — “I do need my entire knee replaced, I've got no cartilage, no support” — he's been in the pool, competing in meets for both able-bodied swimmers and those with a disability.

He still likes competing against guys he grew up with, but says the Paralympics have given him a second chance.

“It really is for me,” says Stein, who competes in a class for athletes with minimal physical disability. “The Paralympics is such an amazing opportunity for someone like me who didn't have aspirations to go to the Olympics, at least after I broke my knee.”

Stein's time of 23.58 seconds over one length of the pool was .42 seconds behind the brilliant Brazilian, David Brasil, but still a personal best and faster than he had ever swam before.

“Andre's such an amazing swimmer — 23.16, that's amazing. I went a lot faster than I thought I was going to go. Our goal was 23.9 at the Games and we go 23.5. Nothing but good news.

“It gives me a load of confidence,” added Stein, who will face Brasil, a quadruple gold medallist at Beijing in 2008, and Canadian star Benoit Huot, a nine-time Paralympic gold medallist, in the marquee 100 freestyle. “I know I can keep up with the best of them. I know I can give Andre a little scare and make him shake in his boots a little bit.”

Stein's medal is sure to go over big in Maple Ridge, where he helped coach the Haney Dolphins swim club this year. In July, parents of kids in the club did a relay to help raise money for Stein.

“That was really funny, oh my. I mean some of the parents who hadn't even touched the water since, I don't know, since they were six years old, hopped in and did it. All their kids were going 'you didn't swim fast enough' and 'you didn't breathe this many times.' That was super funny.”

While the younger athletes swam in pursuit of personal bests, the adults swam in a parents-only relay in support of the Canadian Paralympic Committee and Neptunes’ coach Nathan Stein, a member of the 2012 Canadian Paralympic swim team set to compete in London this summer.

“The parents relay was really a highlight of the meet,” said Jennine Benoit, Director of Swimming for the Neptunes. “It was amazing to see the level of participation, especially from those parents without a swimming background.”

These boys play for Fraser Valley WPC, which finished 10th at the tournament. Two ex Neptunes, Nicholas Bruneau and Giordano Marconato play with Pacific Storm WPC, which took the gold medal and the championship for the second year in a row.

Nicholas Bruneau held his own, playing a key role in the Storm’s journey to gold with three goals, one on a five metre penalty shot, and strong defensive play.

Giordano Marconato came prepared and ready to play. He did not disappoint either his team mates, coaches or the fans. Not only did he shut down all comers as hole check, but his twenty goal showing earned him a spot on the all star team. When asked about his opinion on winning his second National Championship, he replied, “It was much easier than last year. This year it didn’t even seem we were in the finals, because all the other games were so easy.”

In the round robin, Storm made easy work of their two opponents, embarrassing Saanich 21 – 1, followed by an equally strong showing against Dollard III (Quebec) winning 26 – 3. The talk in the stands was, the games would only get more challenging and that the boys better stay mentally prepared. The quarter finals saw Storm walk over St. Lambert from Quebec, with a score of 22 – 1. The semi finals against Ottawa was strategically orchestrated by coach Nikola Maric, who won Most Valuable Coach for the second year in a row, and executed by the Storm players perfectly in a 12 – 6 victory. The combined efforts of Storm birthed the team into the finals versus Camo, from Quebec. The finals first quarter saw Camo draw first blood, and for the first time the Storm team looked vulnerable. The end of the first quarter had a 1 – 1 result, and tension could be cut with a knife. As the second quarter developed, Storm took a one goal lead, but half time came and nails started to be bit as the teams fans bellowed back and forth with support for both sides. The third quarter was the turning point and as Storm started to dominate, the Camo crowd went quiet, and knew their hopes were fading fast. In the end, Storm won by a score of 7 – 3, and the 2012 U16 NCC is in the history books.

Maple Ridge teens selected by Water Polo Canada

By Ashley Bhan - Maple Ridge News
Published: October 06, 2011 1:00 PM
Updated: October 06, 2011 1:50 PM

A couple of Maple Ridge water polo players had the honour of representing Canada during the 2011 Pan American Youth U17 Championships held in San Juan, Puerto Rico in August.

Matt Halajian and Danika Kotylak, selected by Water Polo Canada, played on the men’s and women’s teams respectively.

The tournament was held from Aug. 4-13 and saw teams from the U.S., Brazil and Venezuela competing.
Canada had a strong showing from both teams.

The Canadian women’s team went undefeated to win gold, while the men’s side tied for third place with three other teams and ended up fifth overall. That was enough to secure the last qualifying spot for the Junior Worlds Water Polo Championship in Australia in 2012.

“Ideally, you want to bring home a medal, but we lost a few matches by one goal. The United States ended up losing the gold medal to the Brazilians by one goal,” Halajian said. “I would have liked to come home with a medal, but it didn’t work out that way.”

This was the second year in a row Halajian has represented Canada. Last year he travelled to Toronto and Serbia with the national team. This summer he’ll be heading to Europe with Water Polo Canada to take part in tryouts for next year’s squad. Even though he didn’t win a medal, the 15-year-old Halajian gained valuable experience that will help him down the line.

“It was all very exciting. Just having the opportunity to play for the national team in amazing, but to get go to Puerto Rico and play against the U.S. and Brazil was incredible. I learned a lot and, at times, it was challenging,” he said. “Our hotel was right on the beach, so every morning we’d be up doing dryland training at 9 a.m. and jogging on the beach, and then we’d have to play a game at 3:30 p.m. But it was really fun.”

Halajian and Kotylak were two of the youngest players on their squads and both ended up playing in the starting line-ups for each by the end of the championship tournament, a major accomplishment for young water polo players.

Both players began their water polo careers at the Haney Neptunes Aquatic Club and are currently based in Langley, playing for the Fraser Valley Water Polo Club.

Haney Boy Makes Canadian National Team

Our very own Aidan Elphick-Miner was named to the 1996-1997 Canadian Mens Youth National team! Aidan started playing water polo for Haney at the age of ten and after four years of hard work it has finally paid off!

After two years of combining Fraser Valley's u14 elite program and our very own Haney Neptunes program Aidan has come in to his own as a very dominant hole set for his age. I can proudly say from watching Adian grow and mature that there is no other young man that deserves this accomplishment as much as him.

Haney Neptune Athletes keep working as hard as you can, follow your dreams and the world stands in front of you!

Cody Dodds
Haney Neptunes Aquatic Club
Water Polo
Head Coach

Neptunes battle for spots at Provincials
